Election Commission (EC) is set to meet tomorrow (May 12) to discuss the possible cancellation of the Awami League’s party registration, following a government decision to ban its activities.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin confirmed the development to Banglanews, saying that the commission will convene once the government issues an official gazette.
“We will hold a commission meeting tomorrow once the gazette is published. I cannot make the decision unilaterally—there is a legal procedure. The commission will take a decision based on the majority opinion,” said the CEC.
He clarified that the EC's role is limited to registration, while the government holds authority over banning party activities.
“We do not require separate instructions from the government. Once the gazette is available, we will act accordingly,” he added.
The move follows the government’s emergency decision on Saturday to ban the Awami League’s activities, citing national security concerns.
According to an official statement, the decision was made at a special meeting of the Advisory Council, which also approved amendments to the International Crimes Tribunal Act.
The revised law empowers the tribunal to penalize political parties, affiliated bodies, or support groups.
Under the Anti-Terrorism Act, the government has imposed a temporary ban on all activities of the Awami League, including online operations, until the tribunal concludes its proceedings against the party and its leaders.
The decision came amid growing pressure from the National Citizens Committee, which held a two-day protest demanding action against the ruling party.
