DHAKA: Senior BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed Sunday declared a plan for the formation of National Mass-Probe Commission to determine the “damage done to the country” during the emergency rule under the last caretaker government.

The main opposition party’s standing-committee member disclosed the move while talking to reporters at his law chamber in the city’s Motijheel business district.

Moudud said that exemplary punishment would be ensured against those who were involved in harming the country economically, socially and politically during the state of emergency following the 1/11, 2007 changeover.

The BNP leader said, “The then leaders, including former chief adviser of the emergency government Fakhruddin Ahmed, immediate-past army chief General Moeen U Ahmed, former adviser MA Matin, coordinator of the taskforce on anti-corruption drive Lieutenant-General Masud Uddin Chowdhury and two former directors of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence--ATM Amin and Chowdhury Mohammad Fazlul Bari--will be brought to trial through the Commission for their ‘misdeeds’.”

The BNP leader said the Commission would be formed with doctors, engineers, teachers, businessmen, former justices, legal specialists, journalists and representatives of all classes and professions. The committee also would have to be formed at district level.

Barrister Moudud told banglanews24.com.bd that the last caretaker government destroyed business institutions by detaining hundreds of businessmen from across the country “violating the constitution and human rights”.

“They tortured politicians in the name of eradicating corruption,” said the former law minister, one of the top politicians of the country who were all hunted up into jail on graft charges.

Besides, he alleged, they even attempted to “kill’ BNP chairperson and ex-PM Khaleda Zia and present Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

On a note of dissatisfaction, Moudud said, “We hoped the government would give the persons involved a good lesson by trying them, but it is yet to come true.”
