DHAKA: The government has decided to give state recognition to the foreign nationals and expatriate Bangladeshis who contributed remarkably to the Liberation War in 1971.

Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni disclosed this to reporters Thursday after an inter-ministrial meeting on `Contribution of foreigners in war of liberation’ at the ministry.

”Bangladesh will celebrate the 40th anniversary of independence next year. On that occasion, we will honour, by state, foreign nationals and expatriat Bangladeshis for their outstanding contributions in 1971. Now we are searching and preparing their list,” she said.

The government formed a committee headed by the foreign minister to take necessary step in implementing the decision.

In a meeting on Thursday morning, the committee also formed two subcommittees to prepare the list and guidlines for the awarding.

The two committees have been asked to submit the list and guidelines within six months.

Foreign Minister Dipu Moni said,  ”Bangladeshi missions abroad started sending lists of foreign nationals and expatriate freedom fighters. We already have got a number of lists from different countries, including the USA, Sweeden, Australia, Japan and England.”

Dipu Moni said the subcommittees will examine the lists and prepare a comprehensive list within six months as the government will honor a handsome number of respected foreigners to mark the independence anniversary.

”After getting the list we will invite selected personalities and close relatives of decessed ones to attend the program. If anyone fails to come, the award of honour would be sent through the embassy or high commission concerned,” she added.
