DHAKA:  Rising to a rueful reality of jerrybuilt buildings falling into catastrophic ruin, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) is going to sit on June 8 trying to execute the action plan against some 5,000 delinquent buildings constructed sans its permission.

Sheikh Abdul Mannan, Rajuk member for Panning and Development, said the capital-development agency would sit with all the service agencies concerned for the remedial action.

“We have sent letters to all the utility-service organizations and also provided them with a list of 5,000 constructions made without our permission,” he said.

Rajuk requested the service providers to stop providing all the utility services to the buildings on the list. Bangladesh Bank also has been requested to direct all the banks not to allocate loan for further construction, he added.

The last meeting with the organizations over this issue was held on March 3 last year.

A Rajuk official, on condition of anonymity, said Rajuk couldn’t take proper steps against the illegal buildings because of “political interference and for not getting court permission needed”.

Of the illegal buildings identified by Rajuk, there are a number of building projects undertaken by renowned developers like Genetic Developer Ltd, Green Delta Housing Ltd, Nagar Design, Paradise Developers Ltd and so on, besides private constructions.

The new list also includes some buildings owned by some parliament members, industrialists, judges and government high-ups.

Rajuk has tightened its belt up again over the recent incident of building collapse at Begunbari and a high-rise having cracks at Shantinagar in the city.
