A Cox's Bazar court on Thursday (Sep 26) gave acquittal to BNP Standing Committee Member Salauddin Ahmed in connection with two cases filed in 2007.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Javed Akhtar passed the order this noon when Salahuddin Ahmed and other accused in the case were present before the court.

They submitted a petition demanding suspension of the case and upon completing the hearing on the petition the court granted them acquittal and dismissed both cases.

The cases were filed in 2007 following two separate incidents that occurred in 2001 and 2002, accusing them of stealing fish from two enclosures in Charandwip.  

However, after nearly 17 years, no witnesses were presented before the court, Abu Siddiq Osmani, a senior advocate, told reports after the judgment.

Considering the circumstances, the court dismissed both cases under Section 249 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and acquitted all the accused, according to the lawyer.

The two cases were against Salahuddin Ahmed and over 50 BNP leaders and activists and the charge sheets were submitted by the police in 2018.

After being acquitted of the cases Salahuddin Ahmed said people from different walks of life, including political leaders and journalists, have been implicated in false and motivated cases by the fascist government over the past 16 years.
