Qamrul, Salim placed on 4-day remand in murder case

A Dhaka court today (Dec 18) placed former Food Minister Qamrul Islam and former Awami League (AL) lawmaker Solaiman Mohammad Salim on a four-day remand each in connection with the murder of Jubo Dal leader Shamim Mia.

The incident occurred on October 28 last year in the Paltan area during a political rally.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sharifur Rahman passed the order after Investigation Officer (IO) Md Ferdous Alam, a sub-inspector of Paltan Model Police Station, presented the two accused before the court. The IO had requested a 10-day remand for further questioning.

Before the remand order, the accused were formally arrested in the case, following the IO's application. The court dismissed the defense's plea for bail and granted remand to facilitate the investigation into the killing.

The case is about a conflict between supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Awami League (AL) during rallies on October 28, 2023. The complaint says that AL members, with help from law enforcement, attacked the BNP rally in Nayapaltan, resulting in the death of Shamim Mia.

Later on September 14, a murder case was filed by Abbas Ali, a former member of Jubo Dal's central committee, at Paltan Model Police Station. The case names 704 individuals, including prominent AL leaders and police officials, along with approximately 12,000 unnamed persons.
