The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today (Dec 17) stayed the High Court's order granting bail to former Civil Aviation Minister Mahbub Ali in the murder case of Siam Sardar. 

A three-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Senior Justice Ashfaqul Islam also directed the High Court to dispose of the rule regarding his (Mahbub Ali) bail.

The decision came after the state filed a petition challenging the High Court's bail order. 

Senior Lawyer SM Shahjahan represented Ali, while Additional Attorney General Abdul Jobbar Bhuiyan and Deputy Attorney General Jahirul Islam Sumon argued for the state.

Earlier on September 15, Mahbub Ali was arrested in connection with the murder of Siam Sardar, an employee of Hotel Rabbani in Dhaka’s Mirpur area. 

Sardar was fatally shot during a protest on July 18, 2024, near Mirpur-10. His father, Sohag Sardar, filed the murder case, which was registered by the Mirpur police.

The Chamber Court had previously stayed the bail order on December 12, sending the matter to the Appellate Division for further review. The case involves 114 individuals, including former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
