ACC files corruption cases against ex-mayor Taposh, wife

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed two cases against former Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and his wife for alleged misuse of power, corruption, and wealth beyond known sources of income.

The cases were lodged on Sunday (January 5), by ACC Deputy Director Monirul Islam at the ACC’s integrated district office in Dhaka.

ACC Director General Akhtar Hossain confirmed the matter.

According to the ACC, Taposh, while serving as mayor and former lawmaker of Dhaka-12 and Dhaka-10, allegedly acquired assets worth BDT 73.19 crore unlawfully.

Between September 22, 2013, and August 19, 2024, he reportedly transacted BDT 539.16 crore through 27 personal bank accounts, including depositing and withdrawing substantial sums. He also engaged in abnormal transactions of USD 517,527.

In the second case, his wife, Afreen Taposh, is accused of obtaining assets worth BDT 6.4 crore through unlawful means, facilitated by her husband. She reportedly transacted BDT 70.89 crore through nine personal bank accounts, along with abnormal transactions of USD 395,963.

The ACC alleged that the couple concealed and transferred the illicit funds, violating the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, Penal Code Section 109, and the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012. The cases aim to address these offenses under the respective legal provisions.
