Remand plea for 2 BCL men rejected

DHAKA: A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate district court on Sunday rejected the remand appeal for two Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders on Sunday (February 12) over brandishing firearms during a hawker eviction drive in the capital's Gulistan on October 27, 2016.

Magistrate SM Masud Zaman passed the order after the hearing.

The two accused are general secretaries of BCL Dhaka south and Wari thana units Md Sabbir Hossain and Md Ashiqur Rahman respectively.

Shahbag police station SI Emranul Islam, investigating officer of this case, sought seven-day remand for each to quizzing about legitimacy of their firearms.

Earlier the CMH court rejected their bail petition when they surrendered before the court on February 9 and sent them to jail.

On October 27, 2016 during a drive to evict hawkers from the footpath in Gulistan of the capital, clashes ensued between the hawkers and employees of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and a group of young men.

Sabbir Hossain and Ashiqur Rahman were seen brandishing firearms at the scene.

A case of 'attempt to murder' was filed against two ex-general secretaries by SI Md. Mannan at Shahbag police station.
