Pro-BNP panel sweeps SCBA polls

DHAKA: The Awami League-supported ‘White Panel’ faced debacle in the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) elections as the BNP-supported ‘Blue Panel’ won a landslide victory in the polls.

According to the result, the “Blue Panel’ under the banner of Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Panel got eight posts, including president and secretary, while the ‘White Panel’ under the banner of Sammilito Ainjibi Samannay Parishad got six posts out of 14.

Coordinator of the Election Management sub-committee AY Mashiuzzaman announced the result early Friday (March 24).

BNP chairperson’s adviser and former SCBA president Zainul Abedin was elected president defeating White Panel’s candidate Awami League MP and former law minister Abdul Matin Khasru. Former BNP MP AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon was re-elected secretary defeating Robiul Alam Budu.

The other office bearers of the Blue Panel are-- Umme Kulsum Begum Rekha- vice-president, Shamima Sultana Dipty- assistant secretary. Ayesha Akter, Moushumi Akter, Mohammdad Hasibur Rahman and Sheikh Tahsin Ali- executive committee members.

The office bearers of White Panel are-- Azib Ullah- vice-president, Rafikul Islam Hiru- treasurer, Shafikul Islam- assistant secretary. Kumar Debul Dey, ABM Nure Alam Uzzal and Habibur Rahman Habib- executive committee members.

Voting in the two-day elections of the SCBA for the 2017-18 tenure began on Wednesday (March 22) morning and end in the afternoon on March 23.

Some 31 candidates contested for the 14 posts in the executive committee of the SCBA. Some 3,928 lawyers out of 5,081 exercised their voting rights in the polls.
