EC to ensure free, fair election sans govt influence: CEC CEC KM Nurul Huda speaking at the election roadmap launching ceremony

DHAKA: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said that the Election Commission will make sure of a free and fair national election without government or any other influence.

CEC made the remarks while addressing the election roadmap launching ceremony held at EC Secretariat building in the city’s Agargaon area on Sunday (July 16).

Nurul Huda said, “EC is not accountable to oversee whether political parties can or can not hold private dialogues before the election schedule is announced. This is a matter of government to consider. The EC is only liable to hold a free, fair and acceptable election.”

He said EC is perfectly capable of holding the election without government or any other foreign or domestic influence.

“I think we can hold a fair election under the Awami League-led government and as I have said always that our authority will begin right after the schedule is announced. We can’t tell the government what to do now, out task is preset by law.”

In response to a query about creating level-playing filed for all political parties, the ECE said Election Commission (EC) can do nothing for creating a level-playing field before the announcement of the schedule for the next parliamentary elections.
