DHAKA: BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that if the country was civilized and democratic, the government would have resigned after the release of the Supreme Court full verdict on 16th amendment to the Constitution.
He made the comment at a press conference following a meeting of the party’s central committee’s secretaries held its Nayapaltan central office in the city on Thursday (August 03).
Mentioning from observations of the apex court’s verdict, Mirza Fakhrul asked the government to quit power.
“The Supreme Court observes that there is no democracy in the country. The government becomes arrogant and uncontrolled. The parliament is now dysfunctional. There is no rule of law. The human rights are at stake. The government of any democratic and civilized country could resign after release of such the verdict, said the BNP leader.
The full text of the verdict on 16th amendment was released on Tuesday (August 01). The court scrapped the 16th amendment that had given the Parliament the power to remove SC judges on the grounds of misconduct or incapacity.
Mirza Fakhrul welcomes the move of floating a third political alliance in the country. He sees the meeting of leaders of several parties held at Bikalpadhara Bangladesh chief and country’s former President Dr AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury’s residence as positive.
The meeting was held on Wednesday night (August 02) aiming to forge an alliance beyond the combines led by the Awami League and the BNP.
“We will extend our support to those who will launch movement against the misrule and misdeeds of the current government,” said Mirza Fakhrul.
