‘Army to be deployed during polls, no EVM’

DHAKA: The Election Commission will deploy army during the upcoming parliamentary election and also won’t use any Electronic Voting Machine (EVM), said a senior Election Commissioner.

Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar made the remark to reporters on Monday (Nov 13) in response to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s demand on army deployment and no EVM during polls.

He said, “We have discussed the matter with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda and we mainly decided on deploying army during polls. However, the decision has not been finalized yet. Al though we have no intention to react on BNP’s remarks about the election.”

About using EVM in polls, he said, “Most of the EVM machines are broke. So far we don’t have the preparation to take votes using EVM. However, the next generation will eventually use EVM for casting votes.”
