Awami League founding anniversary Wednesday

DHAKA: The ruling Awami League will celebrate its 61st founding anniversary tomorrow (Wednesday) with countrywide programmes, including paying homage to its paramount leader Mujib.

The party owes its origin to the then Awami Muslim League formed at Rose Garden in Dhaka on June 23, 1949. The progressive leaders and activists of the party excluded the word ‘Muslim’ from the party’s name and established Awami League in 1953, completing its emergence as a non-communal political party.

Elaborate programmes have been chalked out to mark the anniversary of founding of the country’s oldest party, which has ruled the nation for a number of terms since its inception.

The programmes include the hoisting of the national and party flags at party offices across the country at about 5:15 am and placing floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bangabandhu Bhaban at 7 am.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to be chief guest at a discussion to be organised at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre at 4pm.

Party’s district, upazilla and thana units will also arrange programmes on the occasion.

Party general secretary and LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam urged “all leaders and activists of Awami League at district and upazila levels to observe the day in a befitting manner”.
