Brazil has parted ways with manager Dorival Junior following a heavy 4-1 loss to Argentina in World Cup qualifying.
Currently sitting fourth in the South American group with five losses in 14 matches, Brazil remains in a strong position to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
The 62-year-old, who has managed several Brazilian clubs, had taken the reins of the national team in January 2024. His tenure began with a 1-0 victory over England at Wembley in a friendly last March, and he accumulated seven wins, six draws, and three losses from 16 matches.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed his departure after Brazil's heavy defeat to Argentina, who have already secured their place in the World Cup.
In a brief statement, the CBF expressed their best wishes for Dorival’s future and announced that efforts would now be made to find his successor.
Despite never having played for the national team, Dorival's notable managerial achievement was guiding Flamengo to the 2022 Copa Libertadores title.
Reports suggest that Jorge Jesus, currently managing Al-Hilal, is the frontrunner to replace Dorival. Brazil had previously sought to appoint Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti before turning to Dorival. The Athletic reported that Brazil remains interested in speaking to Ancelotti about leading the team for the 2026 World Cup.
