Killings over dowry, land disputes: 4 convicts executed in Sylhet, Rajshahi, Faridpur

DHAKA: Four condemned convicts were hanged in Sylhet, Rajshahi and Faridpur jails on a single night Wednesday—three for killing their wives following dowry disputes and one for murdering his neighbour for land.


Banglanews Sylhet correspondent reported that “for the first time since country’s independence, Sylhet central jail saw the execution of any offender when two condemned convicts were hanged on Wednesday night for committing two separate murders”.

They are Sabul Mia, son of Shonaullah of Surma thana in Sylhet, and Alauddin Swapan, son of Sad Ullah of Baralekha thana in Moulvibazar.

According to the case statement Alauddin Swapan killed his wife over dowry in 2000 while Sabul Mia killed his neighbour Muktadir Ali following a land dispute in 2000. Both were sentenced to death by respective courts in Sylhet and Moulvibazar in 2003.

Official sources said the convicts were brought to the gallows at 00:01am and hangman Shahjahan completed the execution of the death sentences at 00:05am.

DIG, Prisons, Mizanur Rahman, ADM Shahidul Islam and Civil Surgeon Dr. Fayez Ahmed were present at the time of the executions.  
Rajshahi correspondent said the death sentence on a dowry-greedy husband was executed in Rajshahi Central jail on Wednesday night. Abu Bakkar of village Paikpara under Lalpur upazila of Natore was hanged for killing his wife for dowry.  

Jailer of Rajshahi Central Jail Faruque Ahmed told banglanews, “The convict was brought to the gallows at 11:01pm and hangmen Asgar and Babul completed the execution of the death sentence.”

Rajshahi’s additional district magistrate Dewan Mohammad Abdus Samad, Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Quamrul Amin, Civil Surgeon Dr. Jahrul Islam and senior jail super Partha Gopal were present at the time of the execution.   

His body was handed over to his family at about 00:20am.

Bakkar slaughtered his wife Rangila over dowry on February 21 in 1998. Rangila’s father Nabir Uddin filed a murder case against Abu Bakkar under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. He was sentenced to death by a Rajshahi court in February 2001.

Faridpur correspondent adds: For the first time since the independence, Faridpur central jail saw the execution of any offender when one condemned convict was hanged on Wednesday night for killing his wife, official sources said.

The convict was Mohammad Mirajul Sheikh, son of Abdul Sheikh of village Pashchim Kafura under Faridpur Sadar upazila. He was hanged to death for killing his wife for dowry.

Faridpur jail super Mohammad Abdur Razzak said hangman Hafizur Rahman completed the execution at 00:01 am in the presence of  Faridpur deputy commissioner Helaluddin Ahmed, police super Aulad Ali Faqure and civil surgeon Dr. Sirajul Haque Talukder.

Later, his body was handed over to his family.

According to the case statement, Mirajul “burnt his newly wed wife Shefali begum to death” in October 2002. Shefali’s father Machhim Sheikh filed a murder case against Mirajul under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. He was sentenced to death by a Faridpur court on July 6, 2004.
