KOLKATA: The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) on Friday night issued “red alert” on the India-Bangladesh border apprehending “possible militant attack” on the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata by Harkat-ul Jihad-al Islami (HuJi).

BSF sources said the alarm-bell was rung to stop “intrusion” by the militants through the open border of Maldah in West Bengal. So, BSF has strengthened patrol on bordering waterways, they added.

There is a 137-km stretch of frontier between India and Bangladesh in Maldah district, of which 35 kms are waterways without any fence. Some 200 additional BSF personnel have been deployed in the bordering areas.

Most of the border areas do not have barbed-wire fences. Moreover, works for fencing off Kaliachak and Baishnabnagar were not completed yet.  

“We have information that HuJi activists are trying to enter into Indian territory,” said one of the sources.

Meanwhile, the BSF authority requested the district Police Super to scale up police vigilance on the border and adjacent villages.
