Nahid slams India over Chinmoy Das arrest

Nahid Islam, Advisor to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, has criticized India's remarks following the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, spokesperson for the Sammilita Sanatani Jote and former leader of ISKCON, in a sedition case.

In a statement on Wednesday (Nov 27), he said, "We believe that making such statements is an unnecessary interference. They are attempting to further provoke the situation."

He said, "India should focus on ensuring the security and rights of their minority communities instead of interfering in matters of Bangladesh."

Nahid Islam also urged India to act responsibly and avoid subscribing to false propaganda from the ruling Awami League, reports BBC Bangla.

On November 26, Chinmoy Krishna Das was detained at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in connection with a sedition case. The case was filed after a rally in Chattogram, where ISKCON’s religious flag was allegedly hoisted above the national flag, sparking public outrage.

Later, a court ordered his imprisonment the following day.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressed concern over the arrest and denial of bail, citing the need to protect minority rights in Bangladesh. The statement referred to recent attacks on minorities and called for the government to ensure their safety and freedom of expression.

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded by rejecting India’s remarks, calling them baseless and contrary to the spirit of bilateral friendship. The ministry stated that the judiciary in Bangladesh is independent and that the case will be handled according to the law.

The government also condemned the killing of public prosecutor Saiful Islam Alif during clashes near the Chattogram court and said security measures have been tightened in the area to maintain peace.

Bangladesh urged India to refrain from making comments on its internal matters and to act responsibly in maintaining good relations between the two countries.
