MADARIPUR: An outlawed leader was killed in a gunfight between police and his associates at Nilkhi in Shibpur upazila of the district early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Kiran Bepari, leader of Sarbahara, an outlawed party.
Police sources said that sending letter on February 13, the outlawed party demanded extortion from an expatriate and following the incident, police held the ringleader and his two cohorts.
Later, a police team-led by Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Newton Dutta went Bagmara of Nilkhi to recover arms. Sensing the presence of police, Kiron’s cohorts opened fire aiming them and in reply police also fired back that triggered a gunfight.
Kiran was caught line in the fire while he was trying to flee the spot, leaving him dead on the spot.
Meanwhile, a foreign made pistol, two round bullets were recovered from the spot.
