2 UP members killed in Narsingdi AL factional clash

Two people were killed and at least 10 others injured in clashes between two factions of the Awami League in Raipura, Narsingdi, early on Saturday (December 7).

The incident occurred in the Methikanda area of the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Manik Mia, 55, a sitting member of Chandarkandi Union Parishad (UP), and Kalpana Begum, 32, a former member of the same UP.

According to locals, there has been a long-standing rivalry between supporters of Jubo League leader Abid Hasan Rubel and Harun-or-Rashid Harun, the Vice President of Raipura Municipal Awami League.

This ongoing dispute escalated into an armed confrontation between the two factions, they also said.

Harun's supporters reportedly launched an attack on Rubel's group, resulting in the deaths of the two victims and injuries to at least 10 others, some of whom sustained gunshot wounds, they added.

Family members of the deceased claimed that both victims were hacked and shot during the clashes.

The injured were initially treated at a local hospital before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for further medical care.

Police said they brought the situation under control after reaching the scene.

Raipura Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Khan Nuruddin Mohammad Jahangir said that two individuals were brought to the hospital dead. Besides, six others have received treatment for their injuries.

Narsingdi Police Superintendent Abdul Hannan confirmed the matter.

Currently, members of the police, RAB, and the army are present in the area, he added.
