Bangladesh marks Victory Day with renewed hope

The nation proudly marks Victory Day today, commemorating the birth of sovereign Bangladesh on December 16, 1971, after a nine-month Liberation War.

This year’s celebrations are especially poignant as they follow the ouster of Sheikh Hasina’s autocratic regime on August 5, 2024, hailed by many as the nation's "second liberation."

Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule ended amidst mass protests in Dhaka, driven by public outrage over the persecution of dissidents. Facing unprecedented backlash, she fled to India. This year’s Victory Day holds new meaning, symbolizing a fresh start for Bangladesh as the country unites to honour both its independence and its recent struggle for democracy.

The path to this new era was marked by immense sacrifices. Hundreds of lives were lost, over 700 individuals were blinded, many others suffered severe injuries or disabilities, and thousands were wounded. Numerous citizens endured enforced disappearances, while countless survivors remain in hospitals, grappling with life-altering injuries.

On this day, the nation renews its commitment to realizing the dreams of its 1971 martyrs and the aspirations of those who fought to liberate the country from tyranny once again. Tens of thousands are expected to gather at the National Monument in Savar to pay homage to the heroes who made supreme sacrifices for Bangladesh's freedom.

President Muhammad Sahabuddin will lead the tributes at the monument, followed by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. Political parties, cultural organizations, and academic institutions will also lay wreaths at the memorial. A ceremonial 31-gun salute will herald the day, recalling the historic surrender of Pakistani forces that secured Bangladesh’s independence.

The national flag will be hoisted at government and private buildings, with significant landmarks illuminated at night. The day’s programs include discussions, prayers, and commemorations, while the nation observes a public holiday.

In separate messages, President Muhammad Sahabuddin and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus extended their heartfelt greetings to the people. The President urged everyone to work towards a corruption-free and equitable society, emphasizing the importance of upholding the values of the Liberation War and the recent uprising.

“Let us guide our nation towards development and prosperity, fulfilling the vision of a new Bangladesh,” said President Shahabuddin. He expressed gratitude to the freedom fighters, the martyrs, the war-affected families, and all who contributed to the country’s victories in 1971 and 2024.

Chief Adviser Professor Yunus echoed similar sentiments, pledging to work together to build a progressive and well-governed Bangladesh. He described Victory Day as both a source of pride and a solemn reminder of the nation’s unity and resilience.

“Victory Day is a celebration of our freedom and an oath to protect our sovereignty and uphold the spirit of liberation,” said Yunus. Reflecting on the historic importance of December 16, 1971, he vowed to further strengthen Bangladesh's democratic and economic foundations.

On the occasion, the Bangladesh Navy awarded honorary commissions to 32 junior commissioned officers, promoting them to the rank of honorary sub-lieutenant. This gesture reflects the nation’s continued commitment to recognizing dedication and service.

As the nation celebrates this significant day, it does so with renewed hope, determination, and a collective vision of a prosperous and just Bangladesh.
