Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus left Dhaka early Wednesday (Dec 18) for a three-day visit to Egypt to participate in the 11th D-8 Summit in Cairo.

The flight carrying Prof Yunus departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 1:20 am, according to Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder.

Heads of government from several member countries, including Bangladesh, Indonesia, Turkey, Iran, and Pakistan, are set to join the summit on December 19, Azad also said.

This year’s D-8 Summit, themed “Investing in Youth and Supporting SMEs: Shaping Tomorrow’s Economy,” holds special significance for Bangladesh. Azad highlighted that Prof Yunus has been a strong advocate for leveraging the potential of young people since assuming his role as Chief Adviser.

“He (the Chief Adviser) is committed to ensuring that our youth can thrive and reach their full potential. This summit provides a valuable platform for him to advance this vision on a global scale,” Azad said.

During the visit, Prof Yunus will also deliver a lecture at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, he added.

The week marks a significant milestone for the D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation. It began with the 48th Session of the D-8 Commission in Cairo and will proceed with the 21st Session of the D-8 Council of Foreign Ministers on December 18, culminating in the main summit on December 19.

These meetings aim to foster deeper economic collaboration among member states and outline a collective vision for sustainable development.

The D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation, also known as Developing-8, comprises Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey, focusing on enhancing development cooperation among its members.
