Kolkata’s forensic laboratory has confirmed that the DNA from body parts recovered from a hotel sewage system matches the DNA of Anwarul Azim Anar, a murdered Awami League lawmaker.
The confirmation came after Anar’s daughter, Mumtarin Ferdous Doreen, submitted her DNA samples to Kolkata police in late November for comparison.
The DNA analysis was conducted to verify if the remains recovered at Sanjeeva Suites Hotel belonged to the late lawmaker.
A few days ago, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal officially informed Doreen that the DNA results matched.
On May 12, Anar had traveled to Kolkata for medical treatment. The following day, after completing his treatment, he checked into Sanjeeva Suites for reasons yet to be determined. It was later revealed that he was murdered, dismembered, and his remains were disposed of in various locations, including the hotel’s sewage system.
The investigation into the gruesome killing involved joint efforts by Bangladesh police and West Bengal authorities. Several arrests were made across Bangladesh. However, the probe came to an abrupt halt following the collapse of the Awami League government on August 5.
