UN offers technical support for upcoming Bangladesh election Gwyn Lewis, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh

Gwyn Lewis, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, said that the organisation is ready to provide technical and other forms of assistance in the upcoming national election.

She also said that the schedule of Bangladesh’s next national election will be decided by the government and political parties.

Lewis made these remarks while speaking to journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday (Jan 14) following a meeting with Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin.

She said that the UN is keen to support the Election Commission based on its requirements and has initiated a needs assessment mission.

"Today, we also had a meeting with the Election Commission. Based on their needs, we will provide necessary assistance," she said.

The assessment team is set to visit Chattogram tomorrow to engage with various electoral stakeholders, including political parties, civil society members, and experts. After these consultations, the team will prepare a comprehensive report.

Replying to a question, Lewis reiterated that the UN’s role is limited to providing technical and technological support, leaving the decision on the election timeline to Bangladesh’s government and political parties.
