Joint forces have arrested Kabirul Islam Shikder, former president of the Cumilla District Chhatra League and secretary for education and human resources of the Cumilla Metropolitan Awami League.
Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahinul Islam confirmed the matter on Friday (Jan 17).
He said army personnel handed Kabirul over to the police early in the morning following a raid at his residence in the Mogoltuli area of Ward 5 in the city.
According to sources, Kabirul was actively involved in protests during July-August and was reportedly attempting to reorganize Awami League supporters. Intelligence reports suggest he was also working to ensure the success of the Awami League's scheduled strike on January 18.
Kabirul faces four criminal cases, OC Mahinul added. He will be sent to jail through the court later on Friday.
