SC fixes Jan 23 for hearing Azharul's review plea

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today set January 23 for hearing the review petition of Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam, who is seeking a re-evaluation of the death sentence upheld by the court in 2019.

The petition challenges the judgment handed down by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 for Azhar’s involvement in crimes against humanity and war crimes during the 1971 Liberation War.

A five-member bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, passed the order after the case was listed for hearing.

Azhar’s lawyer, Mohammad Shishir Manir, confirmed that senior advocate Barrister Abdur Razzaq will represent the accused during the hearing.

Azharul Islam was sentenced to death by ICT-1 on December 30, 2014, for his role in atrocities committed in Rangpur. He filed the review plea in July 2020, seeking acquittal on 14 grounds.
