DHAKA: Main opposition BNP`s Secretary-General Khandoker Delwar Hossain said there is no moral right of the `illegal` Awami League government to amend the constitution, a day after a parliamentary committee was formed to bring about the change.

The objection came from a press conference held at the BNP central office Thursday to announce their stand against the move as the opposition opted to stay off the ‘all-party constitution amendment committee’.

He said it is not clear to the nation whether the government would cancel the fifth or eighth amendment of the constitution or the country would revert to the constitution of 1972 or they (government) would interpolate something new.

"They are doing everything by abusing power," said Delwar, flanked by other BNP leaders.  

He mentioned that the then BNP government formed a special committee after assuming power in 1991. And he claimed the incumbent government formed Wednesday the special committee in replication of that committee.

Delwar further told reporters that the government did not yet give permission for BNP to stage scheduled hunger strike at Paltan Maidan on July 25.

He warned the government they would have to bear the responsibility for any consequence of denying permission for staging the fast.   

Party Vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman, Joint Secretary Ruhul Kobir Rizvi, Jubo Dal President Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Dhaka Divisional general Secretary Fazlul Haq Milon, Amanullah Aman and Slauddin Ahmed, among others, were present at the press meet.
