DHAKA: Former BNP lawmaker Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu, who was serving life in prison for his involvement in 2009 BDR mutiny, died of cardiac arrest in Rajshahi on Sunday.
Nasiruddin felt pain in his chest at Rajshahi jail. He was immediately taken to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) where on-duty doctor pronounced him dead at 12:20pm.
RMCH Director brigadier general AKM Nasir Uddin confirmed the matter to banglanews.
On November 5, 2013, a Dhaka court sentenced Pintu to lifetime imprisonment for his involvement in the killing of 57 army officers during the bloody mutiny at Pilkhana headquarters of paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), (now Border Guard Bangladesh) in 2009.
The court also convicted Pintu of instigating the murder of 74 people including the 57 senior and mid-ranking officers.
In his political career, Pintu had severed as the central president of BNP’s student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal from 1999 to 2002 and become a BNP lawmaker from Dhaka-8 (Lalbagh, Hazaribagh and Kamrangirchar) constituency in 2001.
In his latest move to politics, Pintu, an assistant organising secretary of BNP, sought nomination for mayor in Dhaka South City Corporations in April 28 polls, which the election commission cancelled.
