DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) is going to constitute Electoral Tribunal to facilitate the complaint over the newly held polls in three city corporations.
According to sources, all preparations have been completed to form the tribunal. The formalities are expected to be done through issuing circular on Monday.
The three Electoral Tribunals will work for three cities. In addition, there will be an Appeal Tribunal, the sources added.
According to the EC plan, the electoral tribunal for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will be formed consisting of a Joint District and Sessions Judge (Dhaka) while an appeal tribunal consisting of Additional District and Sessions Judge and Additional District Magistrate (Dhaka).
The electoral tribunal for Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will be formed consisting of a Joint District and Sessions Judge (Dhaka) to settle allegations of election while the Appeal Tribunal consisting of the Additional District and Sessions Judge and Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education).
Meanwhile, Electoral Tribunal consisting of Joint District and Sessions Judge of Chittagong will be formed for the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) election.
The Appeal Tribunal will be formed consisting of Additional District and Session Judge and Additional District Magistrate (Chittagong Deputy Commissioner's Office).
The aggrieved candidates or their nominee can file case to the tribunal against all irregularities in three city elections.
According to the city elections rules, the candidates have to file case to the tribunal within 30 days of the election results gazette published.
The tribunal will settle a complaint within 180 days after filing it.
If the candidate is not satisfied with the verdict of the tribunal, they can apply to the appeal tribunal within 30 days.
Appeal Tribunal will settle the cases within 180 days.
A Deputy Secretary level official, wishing anonymity, said, candidates can seek three kinds of solutions before the tribunal.
The solutions include the cancellation of the results of the winning candidate; cancellation of the election of a candidate and the declaration of the plaintiff as the winner.
It will also include a re-election, said the sources.
