The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will observe the 89th birth anniversary of its founder and former President, Ziaur Rahman, on Sunday with a series of events.
Born on January 19, 1936, in Bogura, Zia founded the BNP in 1978 and served as the country's seventh president. He was assassinated on May 30, 1981, by a group of army officers in Chattogram.
BNP has announced a day-long program to honor Zia’s legacy. On Sunday morning, party flags will be hoisted at BNP offices, including the headquarters in Nayapaltan. At 11:00 am, party leaders and activists will place wreaths at Zia’s grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
A discussion will be held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the afternoon, reflecting on Zia’s contributions to the nation. Additionally, BNP's associate bodies will mark the day with various activities such as discussions and distribution of warm clothes.
BNP’s city, district, and upazila units will also hold their own observances.
On this occasion, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir paid tribute to Zia, remembering his significant role in the Liberation War, the country’s development, and the restoration of multiparty democracy.
