IU: Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the ruling Awami League, suspended an activist of its Islamic University (IU) unit over assaulting the ‘Daily Independent’ correspondent Shah Alam on the campus.
Shah Alam was assaulted by the BCL activists Mitu Kabir and Majedul Kabir, who are also students of Information and Communication Department of the university.
Quoting eyewitnesses, Shah Alam went to Sheikh Para Bazar close to university at around 7:30 pm on Friday (August 04). Mitu Kabir and Majedul Kabir assaulted him there for previous enmity.
Following the incident, outrage is brewing among journalists of the University Press Club and Journalists’ Association. They demanded that Mitu Kabir along with BCL activists involved in the assault incident must be expelled from party immediately as well as from the university.
Moreover, they made a warning that they will not cover university events unless their demands are met.
However, BCL president Shahinur Rahman Shahin and general secretary Jewel Rana Halim of university branch issued a press release, saying that the accused activist was suspended after the incident by BCL of University Branch
