BNP concerned over Cabinet’s stance on 16th Amendment verdict

DHAKA: The BNP has expressed concern over the Cabinet’s stance about the verdict of the 16th Amendment to the Constitution. The party alleged that the government has taken position against the judiciary through opposing the verdict.

BNP’s senior leaders expressed the concern while speaking at a rally at Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium in Dhaka on Tuesday (August 08).

The rally was arranged on the occasion of BNP’s member collection and renewal program.

BNP vice chairman and president of the Supreme Court Bar Association Advocate Joynal Abedin chaired the rally. The party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Barrister Moudud Ahmed and Barrister Zamir Uddin Sircar, vice chairmen Meer Mohammad Nasir Uddin and Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain and other senior leaders spoke at the rally.

Mirza Fakhrul said that the Cabinet’s stance against the Supreme Court’s verdict is concerning. “They said that they (ministers) will mobile the people against the verdict. The people accepted the verdict. So the countrymen will reject them,” he said.

Barrister Moudud Ahmed said that the Cabinet stance about the verdict proves that they have taken stance against the judiciary.

The Cabinet in its regular weekly meeting on Monday (August 07) expressed annoyance at the observations of the verdict of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.

Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina asked the ministers to mobilize the people against the unexpected observations of the apex court.
