13 Shibir men beaten up at RU, handed over to police

RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY: Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists beat up at least 12 leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, in the Rajshahi University.

The incident took place at Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall of the university early hours on Wednesday (August 09).

Later, the Shibir men were handed over to the police. Some of them, who were injured seriously, were admitted to the hospital.

The BCL leaders said that they conducted raid at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall to retaliate the attack on two fellow leaders allegedly by Shibir men in Sylhet.

On Monday (August 07), Islami Chhatra Shibir men allegedly hacked two BCL activists at Sobahanighat area in Sylhet, leaving them seriously injured.

The BCL men took the Shibir activists from different rooms of the RU hall from1:00 am to 4:30 am.

At that time, documents and computers, cash money of Tk.19, 000 were seized from the Shibir men.
 
On secret information, a suspect was interrogated by Chhatra League leaders at 12:00 am.

At one stage, he confessed his involvement in Shibir and operation began.

Following around a five-hour-long scrimmage, some seriously injured students were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMEC).

Afterward, at around 4:00 am, Shibir men were handed over to Motihar Police Station.  

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Motihar Police Station Mahbub Hossain said tha, they oversaw BCL operation, but could not take part in it as they had not permission from university administration.

Many of the detainees confessed their involvement in Shibir, the OC said.

Legal action will be taken after investigation, the OC added.

The detainees are Ashiqul Hasan Nafis, fourth year student of Anthropology department, Ariful Islam, master’s student of French Language and Literature, Abu Jafar, master’s student of Arabic department, Rakib Ahmed, second year student of Law department, Mahmudul Hasan, fourth year student of Botany, Shariful Islam, fourth year student of Statistics, Jakir Hossain, third year student of Islamic History and Culture, Shahanur Alam Himel, fourth year student of Statistics, Saheb Rana, third year student of Information and Communication Engineering, Abdur Rakib, third year student of Islamic Studies, Nabiul Islam, Aliul Islam, master’s students of Arabic Literature, and Golam Rabbani, third year student of the same department.
