DHAKA: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal for Thursday (October 12) protesting arrest and remand of the party’s ameer, secretary general and other top leaders.
Jamaat Nayebe Ameer Prof Mujibur Rahman announced the hartal program in a statement issued on Tuesday evening (October 10). He also announced to hold doa mahfil across the country on Friday (October 13).
In the statement, it was said that Prof Mujibur Rahman was made Acting Ameer of the party, while ATM Masum was made Acting Secretary General.
Prof Mujibur Rahman protested and condemned the arrest of the party’s top leaders and placing on 10-day remand. He demanded immediate and unconditional release of the leaders.
The Jamaat leader also called upon his party leaders and activists to make the hartal program a success.
Jamaat Ameer Maqbul Ahmed, Nayebe-Ameer Mia Golam Parwar, Secretary General Dr Shafiqur Rahman, Assistant Secretary General Rafiqul Islam Khan, Shafiqur Rahman’s personal assistant Nazrul Islam, Chittagong district (South) Ameer Jafor Sadiq, Chittagong city Ameer M Shahjahan and Secretary Nazrul Islam were arrested on Monday night (October 09) from a meeting in Uttara.
A Dhaka court on Tuesday (October 10) placed them on 10-day remand each in two cases filed under Explosives and Special Powers Act.
