In a calculated heist, a gang of thieves broke into the "Crown Diamond and Jewelers" gold shop at Dhanmondi’s Shimanto Shambhar market in the capital, making off with gold ornaments worth Tk 2.5 crore in just eight minutes.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch (DB) has since apprehended three suspects in connection with the high-profile theft.
DB Joint Commissioner Mohammad Nasirul Islam announced at a press briefing on Sunday (Jan 12) that the arrests took place during raids across various locations in Cumilla between Thursday and Saturday.
Following the suspects' confessions, detectives recovered 50 bhori of stolen gold from a jewelry shop in Cumilla.
The burglary occurred on January 3, when the thieves broke into the shop by cutting its shutter, stealing approximately 159 bhori of gold in just eight minutes, Nasirul stated.
The shop owner lodged a case with Dhanmondi Police Station, and investigators identified the suspects through CCTV footage.
Nasirul added that the gang comprised eight to nine members, and efforts are underway to capture the remaining individuals.
