DHAKA: BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that his party is take part in the approaching municipal polls despite questions over its fairness.

He was addressing the media after a party joint meeting held at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan political office in city on Tuesday afternoon.

He alleged, “There is no democracy in the country. It also lacks freedom of expression. We are not being allowed to hold demonstrations.”

He further said: “Party leaders and activists are being arrested everyday. BNP-backed elected mayors and upazila parishad chairmen are being expelled.”

“Had there been democracy in the country there would not have been anarchy here,” he observed.

BNP chairperson’s advisor Shamsuzzaman Dudu, joint secretary general Mohammad Shahjahan, international affairs secretary Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon, Dhaka division organizing secretary Fazlul Haque Milon and Jubo Dal president Moazzem Hossain Alal, among others, were present at the conference.

They also discussed about the party strategy regarding municipal polls and marking Martyred Intellectual’s Day and Victory Day.
