Voting ends, counting begins in CCC polls

DHAKA: Vote counting begins as soon as voting ended peacefully in Comilla City Corporation (CCC) election in Comilla on Thursday (March 30).

The voting began at 8:00am and continued till 4:00pm across the municipality.

No irregularities and violence was reported during the polls other than a temporary halt in voting at ward-21 due to crude bomb explosion in front of Govt. City College in Comilla.

However, BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged that the election commission (EC) is working in favor of the government during the polls.

A wide variety of voters including women showed up in the centers to cast their votes as voting started in the morning.

Awami League-backed candidate Anjum Sultana Sima and BNP supported Monirul Haque Sakku also casted their vote in the morning.

This is the first large-scale election under the newly formed election commission, headed by KM Nurul Huda.

Three mayoral candidates from ruling Awami League, BNP and JASAD and an independent candidate have been vying in the polls.

A total of 207,566 voters were expected to exercise their rights of franchise in 103 centers.

Besides, the by-election in Sunamganj-2 (Dirai and Shalla upazilas) is also underway on Thursday.
