A Dhaka court today (May 14) sent three individuals to jail in connection with the killing of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo, also a leader of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD).
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam passed the order after police produced the accused, Md Tamim Hawlader (30), Palash Sardar (30), and Samrat Mallik (28), before the court.
Shahbagh Police Sub-Inspector Toufiq Hasan, the investigating officer, requested their detention, and the court granted the plea in absence of any defence counsel.
Police arrested the trio during drives conducted in different areas of the capital earlier in the day.
Shammo, a student of the 2018–19 session at the Institute of Education and Research and literary secretary of the JCD’s AF Rahman Hall unit, was attacked and fatally stabbed by a group of miscreants in the Suhrawardy Udyan area in the early hours of Wednesday.
He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following the incident, Shammo’s elder brother, Shariful Islam, filed a murder case with Shahbagh Police Station against 10 to 12 unidentified assailants.
The investigation is ongoing.
