Former lawmaker and popular singer Momtaz Begum was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of police in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area late on Monday, officials said.

The arrest took place around 11:30pm from a house behind Star Kabab, according to DB Joint Commissioner Nasirul Islam.

“Momtaz Begum, former MP of Manikganj-2, has been arrested. She faces multiple charges, including a murder case,” he said, adding that she was taken to the DB office following her detention.

Police said Momtaz is accused in several cases related to last year’s July protests, which turned violent during clashes involving students and demonstrators.

She is expected to be produced before the court later today.
