SC upholds BNP leader Aslam’s bail

DHAKA: The appellate division has upheld BNP joint secretary general Aslam Chowdhury’s bail ordered by the High Court in a sedition case.

A four-member appeal bench led by Chief Justice SK Sinha passed the order on Sunday (May 28) rejecting a petition filed by state.

Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon moved for Aslam Chowdhury while Attorney General Muhbubey Alam moved for the state in court.

After the hearing, Mahbub Uddin Khokon said Aslam is free now as SC upheld the High Court order.

Aslam came into focus after some pictures of his meetings with chief of Center for International Diplomacy and Advocacy and Israel’s Likud Party leader Mendi N Safadi during events in New Delhi and Agra last year.

On May 15 in 2016, Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) detained Aslam Chowdhury and his personal assistant Asaduzzaman Mia from city’s Kuril Biswa road area.

On May 16, Court granted 7-day remand for Aslam after police showed him arrest under section 54 (suspected of conspiracy to overthrow the government in Mossad Connection).

On May 26, DB inspector filed a treason case against Aslam.

On May 18, An HC bench comprising justices Mifatah Uddin Chowdhury and ANM Basirullah granted bail to Aslam.

Later the state filed a petition with the SC against the bail order, which was rejected on Sunday (May 28).
