Hefazat shocked as Lady Justice reinstalled

DHAKA: Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh Amir Sheikh ul-Islam Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi termed the reinstallation of Greek goddess Themis idol in the Supreme Court premises as frustrating.

Shafi expressed displeasure in a statement on Sunday (May 28) following re-erection of the statue before the Annex building of the Supreme Court, only two days after its removal from in front of the main gate of the court on Friday night (May 26).

Shafi said, “When the people of the country were taking preparation to welcome the holy Ramadan, only after two days of the removal of Goddess Themis’ sculpture, then I came to know like all other countrymen that Themis was re-erected before the Annex building of Supreme Court. Such news made us surprised, shocked and speechless.”

He further said that fun was poked to the religious belief and emotion of the nation through reinstalling Themis at the first night of Ramadan the blessed month for Muslims.

Shafi urged the concerned authority for not making prank with the religious believe, national spirit and tradition of the country, and to eliminate the Greek goddess Themis forever from the country.

However, the sculpture which was earlier removed from the main entrance of Supreme Court premise was later reinstalled before the annex building of the court on Saturday night (May 27), as it drew widespread criticism from some quarters of the country.
