DHAKA: The BNP men locked in a factional clash and created chaos at a function of the party chief Khaleda Zia in the capital city on Wednesday (May 31).

The hassle and roughhousing of the party men took place at about 12:30 pm at Bat-tola intersection of Rabindra Sarani at Sector No. 3 in city’s Uttara.    

The BNP arranged the function to distribute saree and lungi among the destitute marking 36th death anniversary of BNP’s founder and late President Ziaur Rahman.

The roughhousing took place before arrival of Khaleda Zia. Later, the BNP chairperson distributed saree and lungi among the destitute. BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also attended the distribution program.

The BNP men from different areas of Dhaka city north unit thronged the venue from morning.  

Eyewitnesses said that the BNP men of two rival groups of Jatiayatabadi Chhatra Dal and Juba Dal locked in quarrel over position near the stage. Later, they engaged in roughhousing.  

The BNP men attacked each others, leaving several people injured. Police took the situation under control.

However, the leaders of Chhatra Dal and Juba Dal claimed that the Awami League men were involved in the incident in a bid to foil the function of Khaleda Zia.
