DHAKA: There is no bar to continue duties of mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) MA Mannan as the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the High Court’s order in this regard.
A three-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, passed the “no order” after hearing on the petition filed by the government.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam moved for the government, while Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Abu Hanif moved for MA Mannan.
Mannan’s lawyers said that the High Court’s stay order on the suspension will remain in force following the apex court’s order. So, now there is no legal bar for MA Mannan to continue his duties, they added.
On July 6, the government suspended MA Mannan for the third time as a Gazipur court accepted charge-sheet against him in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
On July 9, MA Mannan filed a writ petition with the HC challenging the legality of his suspension order. The High Court stayed the government's suspension order.
Later, the government filed the petition with the Appellate Decision seeking a stay on a High Court order that halted the suspension of MA Mannan.
