DHAKA: The High Court has stayed the trial proceedings against BNP secretary general Mirza fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a defamation case.
An HC bench comprising Justice Md Miftahuddin Chowdhury and ANM Basirullah passed the order on Wednesday (Aug 23).
The HC also issued a rule asking the government to explain why the trial proceedings in the case should not be scrapped and stayed the trial until the issued rule is disposed.
Senior lawyer Zainul Abedin accompanied by Sagir Hossain Leon moved for Fakhrul in court.
Earlier on July 9, a Dhaka court framed charges against Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in the case.
On September 1 in 2014, Nur-e-Alam Siddique, vice-president of Awami Matsyajibi League, filed the case with the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court.
In the case, he alleged that BNP Secretary General Fakhrul on August 24, 2014 at a press conference at the party's Nayapaltan headquarters termed the ruling AL a “killer party” and its chief a “killer”.
