Jubo Dal leader killed in shootout with cops in Noakhali

NOAKHALI: A local leader of Jubo Dal, the youth front of BNP, was killed in a gunfight with police in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali early Thursday (August 23).

Besides, five police members were hurt in the gunfight took place at Daspara area of Alaiyapur union under the upazila at around 02:30am.

However, the law enforcers recovered some arms including pistol, pipe gun, knife, iron rod and grill-cutter from the spot.  

The deceased was identified as M Alam, 30, son of Abul Kashem from Bipur village under Alaiyapur union parishad, and joint convener of the union unit Jubo Dal.  

Police told Banglanews that acting on tip-off they earlier arrested Alam who was a robber and accused in several cases.

Later, they conducted a drive accompanying Alam at Daspara area for recovering arms, following information from him.

At one stage, police retaliated while Alam’s accomplices fired upon police to snatch him.

Alam sustained bullet injuries in the gunfight and his accomplices fled the scene. 

He was taken to Noakhali General Hospital where on-duty physicians declared him dead on arrival.

Quoting the deceased’s family, Alaiyapur union unit BNP Secretary General M Manik told Banglanews that police arrested Alam from his residence on Tuesday morning (August 22).

Begumganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sajedur Rahman said that Alam was accused in 10 cases filed over robbery.

He belonged to Jisan Bahini, a terrorist group in the area, he added.
