DHAKA: Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu has demanded the resignation of Chief Justice SK Sinha voluntarily for making controversy following the verdict on 16th constitutional amendment.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday (August 24), he said that the Chief Justice should resign willingly to end the ongoing debate and regain the judiciary’s image.
The press conference was arranged at office of the minister at Bangladesh Secretariat over the 16th amendment verdict.
Inu, also president of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), claimed that the government did not initiate debate, but the Chief Justice initiated the debate making political comments in the verdict.
“The Chief Justice has taken both the judiciary’s image and himself to a controversial point through the political statement in his verdict. I call upon him to resign willingly to end the controversy,” said the minister.
Terming the verdict as unacceptable, he said that the verdict should be reviewed. President can play role in this regard as per Section 97 of the Constitution, he added.
Inu said that they will take next step on the issue after discussion on the verdict in the Parliament. “We are examining the verdict and thinking legal process for expunging all the irrelevant observations,” he said.
He, however, said that the verdict has not created any political or constitutional crisis neither it put the executive and judiciary in a faceoff situation. It won’t affect the operation of the government and create any statement.
