Interim government adviser Mahfuz Alam said that an all-party meeting to finalize the July Uprising Declaration will be held on Thursday.
He disclosed this during a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy on Tuesday (January 14).
Mahfuz Alam said a draft of the declaration has been shared informally with political parties, including BNP, Jamaat, and other supporters of the uprising. Although most parties agree on the need for the declaration, disagreements persist over its content.
He regarding Thursday’s meeting said the location is yet to be decided.
However, the meeting is confirmed to take place, said Mahfuz, adding that feedback from political parties and stakeholders has been gathered, though discussions with some remain pending.
Referring to the role of students in the uprising, Mahfuz highlighted government’s commitment to ensuring the declaration reflects the uprising’s context and public expectations.
He expressed hope that a consensus-based declaration would represent the collective voice of the people and political forces involved.
The adviser at this time said that the Jatiya Party would not be consulted, as their input was deemed unnecessary.
However, discussions will include leftist parties and other groups actively supporting the uprising, added Mahfuz.
Regarding BNP’s stance, Mahfuz referring Mirza Fakhrul’s comment hoped the party is positive but if they want they can take time.
The finalized declaration will outline the government’s role and could lead to a legal framework, depending on constitutional considerations and future decisions by elected representatives, said the Adviser.
The adviser underscored the declaration’s potential to influence governance and align political accountability with the uprising’s demands in the upcoming national elections.
