Ex-president Abdul Hamid sued over July uprising killings

Former president and Awami League politician Abdul Hamid has been accused for the first time in a lawsuit related to the killings during the July-August 2024 uprising.

The case, filed on Tuesday with the Kishoreganj Sadar Model Police Station, also names Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and daughter Saima Wazed Putul as “masterminds” behind the state-backed killings of protesters.

The plaintiff, 27-year-old BNP activist Tahmul Islam from Kishoreganj, claims to be officially recognized as an injured party in the student-led anti-fascist movement.

He alleges that the accused plotted and ordered their subordinates to use lethal firearms, crude bombs, and sharp weapons to kill civilian protesters.

The case references a violent attack on Station Road, Kishoreganj, on August 4, 2024, where Tahmul Islam and several witnesses were severely injured.

Tahmul contends that the violence was orchestrated by the accused individuals, who used their power to suppress the anti-fascist protests through force.

This lawsuit marks a significant development in the ongoing legal actions surrounding the uprising, bringing high-profile political figures into the legal spotlight for their alleged involvement in the deadly crackdown on demonstrators.
