A sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is being removed in Rangamati as part of a protest launched under the banner of “Anti-Fascist Students and People.”
The removal began on Friday (May 16) afternoon in front of the Upazila Parishad area of the district town.
According to eyewitnesses hundreds of students and locals joined the action, chanting slogans and holding banners and posters.
Protesters claimed that the move was not against any individual or political party but aimed at symbolically removing what they called a "fascist image." They declared that the campaign to erase all signs of fascism from across the country had started from Rangamati.
They also stated that the protest would continue until the sculpture is completely taken down, describing the event as the beginning of a new democratic movement.
As of the latest update, the dismantling of the sculpture was still ongoing. No official statement had been released by the local administration.
