Senior BNP leader Lutfozzaman Babar was released from Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj at 1:45 pm on Thursday, nearly 17 years after being imprisoned. 

Deputy Inspector General of Prisons (DIG Prisons-Dhaka Division) Md. Jahangir Kabir confirmed this information to BanglaNews.

He said that former Home Minister Babar, along with five other prisoners from Kashimpur, has been released from Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.

Babar, a former home minister during the BNP-led government from 2001 to 2007, was elected as a BNP lawmaker from the Netrokona-4 constituency. 

Following his release, he is set to offer prayers at the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman before returning to his Gulshan residence.
